A Veteran’s Triumph: From Battlefield to Better Life:
Ron, a Vietnam War veteran, has found solace and support at Salute 2 Service (S2S). His journey, marked by both hardship and healing, is a testament to the power of community and the transformative impact of organizations like S2S.
A native of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, Ron’s military service took him to Vietnam in 1967 - 1968. As a radio operator, he faced numerous dangers, including life-threatening situations and being wounded in action. The war left its mark on him, both physically and emotionally. |
Upon returning home, Ron encountered a different kind of challenge: the indifference and neglect of a society that seemed to have forgotten the sacrifices of its veterans. His mother, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, no longer recognized him. The war, the wounds, and the isolation took a toll. Ron persevered. He earned his GED, rose to the rank of Sergeant, and even attended the Army War College.
Three years ago, Ron’s life took a turn for the better when he connected with S2S. The camaraderie, support, and resources offered by the organization have been instrumental in his healing process.
“S2S has given me a sense of belonging,” Ron shared. “It’s a place where I can talk about my experiences with other veterans who understand. We can share stories, laugh, and cry together.”

S2S has helped him secure the VA benefits he deserves, including increasing his disability rating from 30% to 100%. This helps secure his financial future. They’ve also assisted him in replacing lost military medals, including a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for Valor.
Today, Ron is giving back to the community by serving as a veteran group leader and counselor at Chandler Hall. He helps fellow veterans cope with the challenges of aging and post-traumatic stress disorder. His dedication to helping other veterans is a testament to the impact of S2S.
